Its what we do

In the last 2 weeks, I've built about six custom "go bags" for friends and customers. They usually come as pictured: Mountain House freeze dried food packs, emergency water (box & packets), emergency food bar, flashlight, glow stick, goggles, duct tape, shovel, leatherman, first-aid kit, lighter & matches, mirror, wipes, toilet paper, gloves (leather & nitrile), bandana, zip ties, bungee cords, ear plugs, plastic bags, masks & pen/paper.

This bag was for a budget of approximately $100. If you have your own backpack or duffle bag, it'll save you a few bucks, but keep in mind, you have sales tax + shipping & handling if you order by mail or internet. If you  can't afford $100 - just start with the basics = food & water. You can buy your normal canned goods + a gallon of water. Your "go bag" doesn't have to be a "luxury item" -  but remember, it becomes one when bad things happen.

All of this stuff that you pay for now, most likely will pay for itself later on. You have to remember, it's a form of insurance. You have insurance for your car, for your health, for your teeth, for your valuables.....now why don't you have insurance for your survival?  Americans (me included) get comfortable and complacent. This isn't a huge problem if you just drive to work, come home and eat your T.V. dinner. But you are not a robot. You have feelings and emotions, and you probably care about less fortunate people (if you have a heartbeat).

What this boils down to = Life is not always about "you". I've been blessed with a wonderful family and amazing friends. I would stick my neck out for them with no questions asked. If one of my family members or friends was hungry or thirsty on a normal day, I'm going to feed them (if they're at my house). Now imagine, the power goes out, we have an earthquake, or something worse happens.....?

Not everyone is prepared, right? But you are! If you have a cheerful heart, you are going to give and help without question. Your "go bag" turns into a restaurant or hospital on the spot. You have your supplies to help yourself, your family and others. Personally, I like to give. It's way easier for me to help, than receive. I guess that's just an issue that I have to work on (I told you earlier, I wasn't perfect, right?).

So, a little bit today, goes a long way tomorrow. Experts are predicting a huge earthquake. Am I holding my breath? No. But, should I live through it, I won't be freaking out, wondering how I'm going to take care of me and mine. Just start small. Put a few things away - start with the basics, like we always talk about and then if the rain comes, you simply extend your umbrella.
